About
Tyler S. Wahl, MD, MSPH, grew up in the Southeast and graduated from Auburn University before earning his medical degree from the University of Alabama at Birmingham School of Medicine. He served as a resident in general surgery at the University of Alabama at Birmingham School of Medicine followed by a fellowship in cardiothoracic surgery with focus in thoracic surgery.
During residency, Dr. Wahl was awarded competitive national research funding during 2 years of dedicated research in surgical readmissions, disparities in healthcare, and implementing processes of care through enhanced recovery after surgery/fast-track surgery. During his focused research years, Dr. Wahl completed a master’s degree in public health. He has collaborated/authored over 20 peer-reviewed research articles and book chapters.
His areas of specialty include non-cardiac thoracic surgery with a focus in minimally invasive techniques, such as robotic approaches, to solve complex oncologic and non-oncologic processes. During his fellowship, Dr. Wahl gained additional robotic certification through the American Association of Thoracic Surgery partnered with Intuitive Surgical as an advanced robotic surgeon.
Dr. Wahl maintains memberships with several national and local professional organizations including the University of Alabama at Birmingham Medical Alumni Association, the American College of Surgeons, the Association for Academic Surgery, American Association of Thoracic Surgery, and Society of Thoracic Surgeons.
Dr. Wahl and his wife, Brooke, have one son and three daughters. He enjoys family time through church, travel, sporting events, and activities with his kids. In his free time, he strives to achieve the ever-elusive single digit handicap in golf.
